Trump Team Should Pick a Coherent North Korea Strategy

  • Trump: 'Fire and fury' talk on N. Korea 'wasn't tough enough'

This elaborately formulated clause excludes the island of Guam, as it is too far south. However, people in NATO circles are saying that the allies are unlikely to insist on this limitation and would support the US nonetheless.

In a call Friday with Guam Gov. Eddie Calvo (R), President Donald Trump assured him that the White House is "with you 1,000 percent" following North Korea's threat of nuclear attack.

"By forcing us, or the police department, to choose between the values of the city and the philosophy of the police department, in community policing, I think it's a false choice and it undermines our actual safety agenda", Emanuel told CNN.

"This would entail a more significant impact on share markets with, say, 20% or so falls before it became clear that the U.S. would prevail", Shane Oliver, head of investment strategy and chief economist at AMP Capital, forecast to The Wall Street Journal.

Kim's behavior has clearly become a net negative for China, massively undercutting Beijing's efforts to close the American umbrella in the East. If China cannot settle a situation that is so plainly adverse to its interests, it will be revealed as a paper tiger. And, of course, all of this would happen from the comfort of his gaudy gold-plated resort at Bedminster, and he'd be safe. "Any strike by the DPRK ... would result in the DPRK's destruction as we know it. It would be the Darwin Award to win all Darwin Awards", he said.

But North Korea continued to fuel tension Saturday, with the Rodong Sinmun newspaper reporting that almost 3.5 million people, including students and retired soldiers, have asked to join or rejoin the North Korean military to fight against the United States over the latest sanctions it encouraged through the UN Security Council.

The Pentagon said the United States and South Korea would proceed as planned with a joint military exercise in 10 days, an action sure to further antagonise North Korea. "Military solutions are now fully in place, locked and loaded", Trump boasted from the golf links of New Jersey on Friday.

Japan's government decided to deploy its Patriot missile defence system to four locations in the west of the country, media reported. There are very narrow constraints built into the country's pacifistically orientated constitution, and despite the growing pressure from Washington there is still great skepticism among the population regarding all things military.

Again referring to Kim, Trump added, "If he utters one threat. or if he does anything with respect to Guam or any place else that's an American territory or an American ally, he will truly regret it, and he will regret it fast".

The US president added that he hopes that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un "will find another path". "Listen to the news". Beijing allows fuel and coal to cross the shared border of the two countries and provides large quantities of food aid to its neighbor. A succession of US presidents have seen this as totally unacceptable. The letter also said that during the appeals process, the allegations of physical coercion were reportedly not investigated, which it said would violate both international law and Muslim Sharia law if true. Although it supported stiffer United Nations sanctions after repeated North Korean missile tests, Chinese officials also want a restart of six-party talks, which stalled in 2009.

The message to America to stop this provocative gabbing is coming from allies far and wide as well as from the occasional foe. "Nobody loves a peaceful solution more than President Trump, that I can tell you ..."

So it's hard to see the president cashing this particular rhetorical check. A hermit kingdom of wretched poverty, ruled despotically by a thuggish family bent on destabilizing the world.

The middle ground between Trump's saber rattling and Tillerson's diplomatic pleading would be a comprehensive policy toward the goal of regime change. Such a temporary agreement would not satisfy the US demand that North Korea abandon its nuclear weapons, so the US would probably not sign such an agreement.
