  • Shares in US gun manufacturers rose on Monday just hours after Stephen Paddock killed at least 59 people and injured 527 when he went on a shooting rampage in Las Vegas

After bursting into his room on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel-where police said Paddock had killed himself-officers found 23 guns in the hotel room, including high-powered rifles capable of penetrating police armor.

US records show Paddock lived in a three-year-old, $US396,000 ($A506,642) two-bedroom home in the tiny desert community of Mesquite, 128km northeast of Las Vegas near the Arizona state border.

Twelve bump fire stocks were found on firearms recovered from Paddock's hotel room, said Jill Snyder, the special agent in charge of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives' San Francisco field office. He said the speed with which they reacted to the shooting was "miraculous and prevented further loss of life".

Meanwhile, investigators are taking a harder look at the shooter's girlfriend and what she might have known about the attack, with the sheriff naming her a "person of interest" and saying the FBI is bringing her back to the US on Wednesday for questioning.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Sheriff Joseph Lombardo told reporters the rifles police uncovered range in caliber from.223 to.308, and some were equipped with scopes.

More than 525 people were injured - some by gunfire or shrapnel, some trampled - in the pandemonium adjacent to the Las Vegas Strip as police scrambled to locate the assailant.

The attack was a threat police could not have prepared for, McMahill said.

In his car, police discovered several kilograms of the bomb ingredient ammonium nitrate. Investigators believe that Paddock transported the weapons to his room in separate trips.

Las Vegas is still reeling after tragedy on the Strip.

Las Vegas officials are scheduled to provide a 4 p.m. ET update on the investigation into Sunday's Las Vegas shooting. On automatic weapons, the trigger has to be pulled and held only once to fire off several rounds. It hurts my heart that this would happen to anyone who was just coming out to enjoy what should have been a fun night'. We saw people getting shot, ' he said. But I do have to say, how quickly the police department was able to get in was really very much of a miracle.

The Las Vegas gunman set up cameras inside and outside his hotel room before firing for nine minutes at a concert crowd below.

Police dispatch recordings hear first responders breach suite 135 on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel.

"There's a significant amount of body worn camera footage that we are going through", Undersheriff Kevin McMahill said at a press conference Tuesday. "Please know that you are in our prayers and that our hearts are heavy for the families who have been left heartbroken and without answers".

More than 500 people were injured in the attacks.
