  • A gunman has reportedly shot several people at the Mandalay Bay casino in Las Vegas

Earlier in the day, U.S. President Donald Trump visited Las Vegas, marking the first time since taking office that he has had to confront a major mass shooting.

After recounting the horrific events that occurred in the moments immediately after Stephen Paddock opened fire on the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival to Burnett, the host introduced McGrath, who joined the interview by phone.

In the process of saving those lives, Smith took at least two bullets, one in the arm and another in his neck.

He said there could also be a genetic component to the slaying: Paddock's father was a bank robber who was on the FBI's most-wanted list in the 1960s and was diagnosed as a psychopath. Authorities say 59 were killed, and more than 500 were wounded.

"One man had blood all over him and that's when I knew something was seriously wrong", Mike Thompson from London told the BBC.

Clemente said a "psychological autopsy" may be necessary to try to establish the motive.

Police believe Paddock acted alone.

For now, Paddock remains a mystery. "This individual ... didn't leave the sort of immediate thumbprints you find on these kinds of attacks".

The killer also had cameras set up inside and outside the suite.

Paddock's age places him in the minority of mass shooters, said Laura Dugan, professor of criminology at the University of Maryland.

The hail of gunfire stopped when security guards approached Paddock's room at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, McMahill said.

He said his brother was an accountant and a multi-millionaire real estate investor who "had nothing to do with any political organization, religious organization, no white supremacists - nothing, as far as I know".

The guard was "very heroic" and provided police with information about the shooter's location, McMahill said.

That person never checked into the hotel, Carragher told CNN.

The FBI said Paddock had no connection with international militant groups. Paddock, 64, killed himself as authorities closed in on him in his hotel room.

"She was sent away so that she will be not there to interfere with what he's planning", the unidentified sister said.

The Daily Mail newspaper in the UK published several photos taken in Paddock's room after the shooting. "Scared, anger, heartache, compassion and many others". Stacks of ammunition magazines used in rifles can also be seen.

Police said they're investigating the source of the leaked photos.

Police found 23 guns in his hotel room, as well as firearms and explosives at his Nevada home. He has additional property in northern Nevada.

A nearby church rang its bell 59 times, once for each of the people killed in Sunday's shooting.

Paddock's violent transformation has mystified everyone - his brother, investigators and the families he victimized.

The Associated Press reports officers confronted Paddock on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino across the street from the concert.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Sheriff Joseph Lombardo explained the room was one large suite with uninterrupted views of the Las Vegas Strip, meaning he had a clear view of the festival.

The gunfire that interrupted the concert was initially mistaken for fireworks.
